At MDI
IMPORTED CAR SERVICE in Town Hill, David White runs perhaps the
world's greenest auto repair business. Among other things, he heats his
place with recycled motor oil and wastes next to nothing. A certified
Bosch Automotive Service Center, MDI Imported Car Service understands
foreign cars like few others.
The MAINE COAST SARDINE
HISTORY MUSEUM in Jonesport is a fascinating place to anybody
the least bit interested in Maine history. Museum director Ronnie
Peabody has been associated with the sardine industry his entire life.
He says that at its peak, in 1952, there were at least 50 canneries in
Maine processing and packing herring. For Peabody, the museum
represents a lifelong dream come true, a dream he has fulfilled all on
his own.
The
people at MAINE'S OWN
TREATS on the Bar Harbor Rod in Ellsworth offer free samples
of the most popular of the 26 varieties of jams and jellies they make.
This shop is billed as having the state's largest inventory of
Maine-made food products. While you're there, you can pick up a free
mail order brochure. Call 207-667-8888.
MAIN STREET
AUTO CARE on the Bar Harbor Road in Ellsworth provides a broad
range of automotive services, including Transtech, a service that
replaces virtually every last drop of your transmission fluid. There's
a mechanic on duty here seven days a week.
MIKE'S
COUNTRY
STORE on
Water Street in Ellsworth has been in business since 1897, having
survived fires and floods and depressions and God knows what else to
become one of Maine's oldest continually run businesses. You can get
pretty much all of life's essentials here. Visit them on FACEBOOK.
How does
one combine top quality with low prices? Amy Gilley, a very bright
young Maine lady, seems to have found a way. In her OUTFITS CONSIGNMENT
BOUTIQUE
on Rte 1A in Holden, she invites people to choose between donating and
submitting merchandise on consignment.
The RED BARN CAMPGROUND
on the Bar Harbor Road in Holden offers 120 sites, most with water,
sewer and electric hookups, some with 50 amp service. Situated just a
few minutes from I-95, the campground is handy both to Bangor/Brewer
and Ellsworth/Mount Desert Island. It's basically Bar Harbor at half
the price!
The folks
at RUSSELL'S MARINE
in Stockton Springs are happy to help new sailors. If you're a novice,
they know you have many questions. Well, consider them your boating
answer source. They'll answer your questions in a low pressure,
friendly way. They can help you select the right sailboat for the type
of sailing you're envisioning. To them, you're not a one-time potential
buyer. Instead, you're a fellow sailor and a potential lifelong
customer. They want you to return again and again because you were
treated so well with each and every interaction.

To our way of thinking, the
best place to watch football on TV
is the MAD HATTER PUB AND GRILL at
166 Cottage Street. There are several
large flatscreen TVs and strategically situated overstuffed couches.
The
menu features homemade treats made with fresh ingredients such as
their
famous tri-colored tortilla chips topped
with mozzarella cheese black olives, onion, tomato, jalapeno, corn and
shredded lettuce, portabello fries, bruschelta chicken, parmesan
sandwich ciabatta bread, and fresh mozzarella, homemade bruschetta mix
and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. This is where we go to watch Tom
Terrific lead the
patriots. If the game isn't to your liking, the good folks here also
provide free WIFI.

In Bar Harbor we've eaten often at MAMA'S DIMATTEO'S often
and can recommend the food wholeheartedly. It's a family-style, casual
Italian restaurant, most everything is made on the premises, and prices
are competitive. Owner/chef Eric Olson accepts ITEX trade drafts.

For 25 years, POOR BOY 'S
GOURMET RESTAURANT has been a local favorite of dine rs seeking delicious food at reasonable prices. Featured
are lobster, seafood, steak, chicken, vegetarian dishes and Poor Boy's
special "Bottomless Bowl of Pasta". Poor Boy's has a full bar and makes
what many insist are the best frozen Blueberry Daiquiris in New
England. Always on hand are several locally brewed beers on tap. Poor
Boy's has an excellent wine list (including nightly $15.00 specials)
and a complete selection of non-alcoholic beverages. For dessert, their
cheesecake and berry pies are "simply the best!"
POPPY'S LOBSTER &
CRAB WAGON on the
waterfront in Searsport has great
prices—like lobster rolls for less than ten dollars and
crabmeat rolls for less than six. The cold
drink machine delivers liquid refreshment for a buck, a price we
haven't
seen in quite some time. There are grills nearby for people who want to
do their own cooking.

pie. In addition to that, there are daily specials, pizza, and
incredible seafood baskets. It's an Ice Cream Shop with a whole lot
more!

The RIVERSIDE CAFE on

If you stay on Rte 1 through Ellsworth, you'll come to RUTH AN D WIMPY'S KITCHEN where quite often
you can get the area's best deal on a lobster dinner. Here also is
Hancock’s foremost celebrity Wilbur the Lobster, the world's biggest
lobster sculpture. A few years ago, Roadway Express included Wilbur on
its list of the 12 most interesting things to see in the United States.
The 20-foot, fiberglass creation has been the subject of countless
articles and mentions in tourist-related publications. Kirstie Alley
offered Wimpy a blank check for Wilbur, but he turned her down. "That’s
our logo," he pointed out.
