Our online dictionary defines barren land as "unproductive, infertile, unfruitful, sterile, and desert." This has suggested to us that BARREN VIEW GOLF COURSE in Jonesboro might benefit from a different name. This unusually scenic course takes its name from the nearby blueberry barrens, but how are tourists supposed to know this? Whatever it's called, Barren View is a true links course offering a championship standard course suitable for players of all abilities.

BENNETT’S GEMS & JEWELRY in Belfast offers an interesting and varied assortment of gemstones, minerals, and fossils. Open year round, Bennett’s is the place to find affordable gemstone jewelry from Maine and the world. Here you’ll find Maine’s largest assortment of polished stones.

"We're not a biker shop," Betsy is quick to point out, although her BLACKSHEEP TRADING CO. on Rte 3 in Trenton stocks lots of stuff such a custom sheepskin motorcycle seat covers that bikers like.  On hand also are thousands of articles to be enjoyed by the whole family including sheepskin slippers and matchless American memorabilia.

The CALAIS MOTOR INN has Washington County's only heated, indoor, Olympic-sized swimming pool.

A bit of the Amish on coastal Maine. At the CHERRYFIELD MAINE GENERAL STORE, shopkeeper Royal, an organic egg farmer of Amish stock, believes in simplicity and delivering true value at small cost. The store, he says, is about local and affordable arts and crafts, antiques, and homegrown farm products. Come see for yourself.

Tucked into the Ray's Plumbing and Heating building off High Street in Ellsworth, COASTAL PAWN & AUCTION wheels and deals for all kinds of things. The people here will buy, sell and pawn just about anything. Call 207/667-6533. Co-owner Angela Nevells is a licensed auctioneer (# AUC1523).

When Maine's famous Perry's Nut House in Belfast closed its doors, its assets were auctioned off, and its fabulous nut collection went to DIMARCO REALTY in Prospect Harbor. It's the world's biggest nut collection, including examples of every known botanical nut, and on public display. Check it out in the adjoining Coastal Antiques Shop. If you’re looking for real estate Downeast, Al DiMarco is the guy to see. He has a huge selection, and he’ll treat you right.

After a dozen years in the furniture refinishing business, David Conary has opened a gallery at DOWNEAST REFINISHING on the Bucksport Road in Ellsworth that can only be described as a unique cross between a new furnture showroom and an antiques shop.

If cars excite you, check out the possibilities at EAST COAST PERFORMANCE on the Douglas Highway. Here you'll find all the add-on accessories to make your car or truck something really special. Visit them on FACEBOOK.

The EGGEMOGGIN COUNTRY STORE on Route 15 in Sedgwick serves as the center of community life hereabouts. On hand are pretty much all of life's necessities—fresh produce, meat, and other staples; a wonderful little bakery; the latest videos, fuel, magazines and newspapers, and 24 and more varieties of soft serve ice cream. Here also is an Agency Liquor Store. You can buy gifts and recycle cans and bottles. A large bulletin board will keep you up to speed regarding community happenings.

Maine has plenty of Variety Stores, but only a few Incredible Variety Stores. Leading the parade here is ELMER'S DISCOUNT on Route One in Columbia, a place of such great variety it makes one a bit dizzy. Shop here for hardware, housewares, crafts, plumbing, sporting goods, gifts, marine supplies, paint, books, automotive, lawn & Garden, toys, and more.

Located in the historic Archibald-Adams House (circa 1793) on Main Street in Cherryfield, the ENGLISHMAN'S B&B is situated on the banks of the beautiful Narraguagus River. Originally built in 1793, this Federal-style home was renovated  and restored to museum quality in the 1990s. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you're among those who think art should be fun, you won't want to miss ERNIE'S. Operating from a small shop in Town Hill, Ernie Abdelnour fashions fascinating, often funny sculptures of copper and brass, odd pieces of plumbing, tools, assorted debris, and anything else that strikes his fancy. Truth be told, Ernie seems to be a bit hung up on vehicles--many of his pieces are boats, trains, cars, fire engines and wagons, although he also has done sundry buildings and much else. He does a frog series that features a piano-playing frog campaigning against gourmet food—including, of course, frog legs. Call 207-288-5337.

The people at EL EL FRIJOLES take pride in serving high-quality Mexican food that is tasty, healthy, and nutritious. They make pretty much everything from scratch, every day, and strive to use as many local and/or organic ingredients as possible. They don't add sugars to things that shouldn't be sweet and don't add fat to food that doesn't need it. They can modify most entrees for people with special dietary needs. Best Mexican food in Sedgwick, they joke, (since it Sedgwick's only Mexican restauarant). Service with a sense of humor.

ELLSWORTH GIANT SUB

Chef-owned and operated since 1999, the culinary style celebrates New England traditions without being bound by them. The cuisine is prepared daily using the finest seasonal ingredients, local and organic produce, farm-raised meats and very best fish the oceans have to offer.
